Martinez's numbers aren't a mirage. His 86.8 avg exit velocity allowed is among the best in baseball. The one-year, $13M deal he signed in February looks like the heist of the winter. Lauer, meanwhile, went 1-5 with a 6.69 ERA in Toronto before the Dodgers nabbed him for roster filler, and he's 2-5 with a 5.47 ERA in blue and white. The velocity is down, the stuff is down. The Dodgers' front office publicly promised they could "correct the issues." They haven't.

The bigger picture: Tampa traded Brandon Lowe and Shane Baz this winter — signals of a rebuild. Instead, Kevin Cash built something. The Rays are 5th in batting average, 4th in AL team ERA, and their small-ball machine keeps winning. Craig Kimbrel just came off the IL to fortify the bullpen. The question isn't whether they're for real. It's whether the market has caught up.

Chase Burns is the best young arm in baseball that national broadcasts aren't covering enough. At 23, he has a 1.96 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 59 innings. His fastball sits 99 mph. His slider has a 56.3% whiff rate — the highest for any qualified starter in the majors.

He stepped in when Hunter Greene went down with right elbow surgery and hasn't just held the Cincinnati rotation together — he's generated NL Cy Young buzz from people who actually watch the tape. ESPN's Jeff Passan predicted Burns would beat Paul Skenes for the award. The two-pitch profile (fastball/slider) in the mold of early Spencer Strider is doing things Strider-level arms do: making lineups look helpless.

The risk: the Reds have a 140-inning threshold in mind. Burns is approaching it. A shutdown or severe workload limitation is coming, which makes every remaining start appointment viewing. The Mets send Tobias Myers. Both clubs sit below .500 — CIN 33-37, NYM 32-39 — which is exactly why this game doesn't get the spotlight it deserves.

Tarik Skubal makes his second start since elbow surgery, and the backdrop is a Houston team that looks nothing like itself. The back-to-back AL Cy Young winner had a loose body removed on May 6. His return start June 13 was rough — 4.2 IP, 3 ER, 80 pitches. He's on a strict pitch count. The Tigers (29-42) need him whole for any second-half relevance; this is a data-collection outing, not a masterclass.

On the other side: Houston sits at 33-40 and the injury list reads like a roster. Hunter Brown has been out all season. Bryan Abreu posted a 12.96 ERA in 10 appearances before losing his closer role. Tatsuya Imai, the NPB import, has managed a 22% chase rate — the transition hasn't taken. The Astros' team ERA was the worst in the AL through 42 games.

Troy Melton faces Kai-Wei Teng (the one bright spot — 2.19 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, Houston's quiet savior this year) in what amounts to a "which struggling franchise is less broken" contest.
