Shane McClanahan is no afterthought here. He's been quietly excellent since his Tommy John return — 66 strikeouts in 64 innings, just 3 home runs allowed, a .218 opponent average. On any other day he'd be the headliner. Today he's the warm-up act.

The Dodgers just activated Tommy Edman from the 60-day IL yesterday, adding another dimension to a lineup that already leads the NL in wins (47-27, 24-12 at home). Tampa's 41-29 is the AL's best record, but they've been a different team on the road — and Ohtani at home on a 74-degree California afternoon is the single toughest assignment in baseball. The angle isn't who wins. It's whether anyone scores.

On June 10, Max Scherzer became the 11th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,500 career strikeouts. One week later, he arrives at Fenway with a 10.23 ERA, 9 home runs surrendered in 22 innings, and a .303 opponent average. That's a home run allowed every 2.4 innings. The 41-year-old signed a $3M prove-it deal with Toronto this winter. Six starts in, the only thing being proved is that Father Time doesn't negotiate. Scherzer has walked more batters (9) than he has strikeouts above his walk total (14 K vs 9 BB). The K-BB gap that defined his career has collapsed.

Here's the wrinkle: Boston is 12-23 at home — worst in the American League. Fenway has been a run-suppression environment all season. Jake Bennett (5.28 ERA, 3 starts) is the opener Boston is rolling out, and the line has flipped — Toronto opened as the favorite, but the market moved BOS to -131. The market is pricing Scherzer's arm, not Boston's lineup.

The weather is the story. Busch Stadium is forecast for 90°F with 24 mph sustained wind from the south-southwest — the strongest wind on the entire 15-game board, and it's not close. Yankee Stadium's 13 mph is the next-highest. When wind pushes out at this speed, fly balls that die on the warning track in April become souvenirs in June.

San Diego is running a TBD opener after placing Mason Miller on the bereavement list. Kyle Leahy (5-3, 4.64 ERA, 1.59 WHIP) takes the ball for St. Louis, and "solid but hittable" is not a profile you want when the air is moving like this. The line has already flipped — San Diego opened as the favorite, and St. Louis has taken over at -122.

The 10.5 total is tied for the board's highest, but with this wind, 90-degree heat thinning the air, and a TBD bullpen game against a pitcher who allows 1.59 baserunners per inning, the question isn't whether the total is right. It's whether it's high enough.
