THE HARD COUNT

The NL's two best records collide and the road team is -193. That's not a typo. Milwaukee (45-27) visits Atlanta (46-27), and the market says it doesn't matter that the Braves have the second-best home record in the National League. Jacob Misiorowski is that much of a distortion.

The 23-year-old's numbers don't look real: a 1.34 ERA, 131 strikeouts in 87 innings, and a 0.74 WHIP that — if it holds — would break Pedro Martinez's 2000 record of 0.737 for the lowest by a qualified starter in modern history. His last seven starts: 6-0, 0.18 ERA, 72 strikeouts in 49 innings. His fastball has touched 104.5 mph, the fastest by a starter in the Statcast era.

The angle: Atlanta just lost Spencer Strider to the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation. Martin Pérez has been quietly excellent (2.90 ERA, .202 BAA at age 35), but he's not built to absorb this matchup. The Braves' rotation depth — not their record — is what the line is pricing.

May was brutal. A 5.72 ERA, four homers surrendered in a single start, and a growing chorus suggesting the 37-year-old's arm had finally lost the war of attrition. deGrom's homer problem — 13 in 64.2 innings, a 1.81 HR/9 that made him a liability in any park with a short porch — was the story of his first two months.

Then June arrived. Three starts, 17 innings, two earned runs. A 1.06 ERA with a 19:3 K:BB ratio. He blanked the Guardians across six innings, tossed five scoreless against the Mariners, and held Boston to two runs on six hits with zero walks. Something clicked, and the walk rate tells the story — he's commanding the zone instead of nibbling around it.

What to watch: Globe Life's retractable roof neutralizes weather. The Padres have been middling on the road (roughly .500), and Randy Vásquez is the kind of back-end starter deGrom's June version eats for lunch. The 7.0 total is the second-lowest on a 14-game board.

Here is the strangest number on the board: the Chicago White Sox are 39-34 — tied for the AL Central lead, two years removed from the worst record in modern baseball history (41-121). And they're +188 underdogs against a team that is 30-44.

The reason is one name. Tarik Skubal, returning from nanoneedle-assisted surgery for loose bodies in his elbow, has a 2.81 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in eight starts. But here's the context the line doesn't show: he threw only 80 pitches in his last outing. He's on a leash. Gleyber Torres just hit the IL with an oblique strain. Detroit's offense has been bottom-five in the AL all season.

What to watch: The White Sox have the better record by nine games. The market is saying that Skubal's name — not his pitch count, not Detroit's lineup, not the standings — is worth more than a nine-game gap. Whether that holds depends on how deep he can go.
