Chicago leads the AL Central by a game and a half over Cleveland, and for one night the schedule simplifies the race: the two teams settle part of it themselves at Progressive Field.

White Sox starter Davis Martin — the same pitcher whose FIP and ERA disagreed with each other two weeks ago — has allowed one earned run in 10.2 innings this September, a 0.84 mark that looks nothing like his 4.05 season ERA. He needs it: Chicago's bullpen has thrown 20.6 innings over the last three days, the most of any team on tonight's board, after closer Sean Burke logged 94 pitches Sunday. Three relievers are already unlikely to be available tonight.

A division race this tight usually comes down to who has the freshest arms left in September — and Chicago just spent a lot of its best ones getting here.

Pete Crow-Armstrong made a career out of center-field plays that shouldn't be outs, and this season he isn't even the whole story — just the loudest part of it.

Crow-Armstrong is personally worth +16 defensive runs saved and +26 outs above average, and he plays behind a team that leads all of baseball in both metrics at once: +110 DRS and +68 OAA, neither number close to second place. Dansby Swanson adds +16 OAA at shortstop. Atlanta's own defense — +48 DRS, +19 OAA — would lead most divisions; tonight it's the away glove. Wrigley's wind sits at just 3.8 mph tonight, so the ballpark isn't the swing factor it can be here — the defense is doing that on its own.

Atlanta still leads the NL East by 4.5 games and Chicago is defending a 1.5-game hold on the league's last guaranteed wild card spot — both real, both background tonight. The number that actually decides the game on the field is the one neither offense gets to argue with.

Aaron Judge's Batting Line Still Hasn't Caught Up to How Hard He's Hitting the Ball.

How much longer can Aaron Judge's results lag this far behind his contact quality? New York's on a 12-game trip to close the year and the answer might matter more than the standings do.

Judge is hitting .243 with a .374 wOBA in 283 plate appearances this season — solid, unspectacular by his own standard, and still shortened by a stretch on the injured list. Statcast's contact-quality model puts his expected wOBA at .401, a 27-point gap that ranks among the widest "due" readings on the board. The raw numbers underneath it aren't modest: a 57.5% hard-hit rate, a 20.9% barrel rate, and a 15.2% walk rate all point somewhere louder than the batting average admits.

New York has the AL's second wild card spot locked down by more than eleven games — the kind of cushion where whether Judge's results finally catch up matters more in October than it does tonight.

San Diego's win streak that carried over from last night keeps running into the softest matchups on the schedule, and tonight's is about as soft as it gets.

The Padres hold the National League's final wild card spot by 2.5 games over Arizona, and they get to defend it against a Colorado team that has lost eight straight and owns the sport's worst record at 55-95, at altitude where the ball carries (Coors' run factor is the highest in MLB). Walker Buehler takes the ball riding San Diego's own eight-game winning streak. Arizona doesn't get to sit still either — the Diamondbacks host a sub-.500 Miami club in Phoenix, their own shot at shaving into the gap from the other side.

Neither result changes the other team's math directly — Colorado and Miami aren't racing anyone — but every Padres win and every Diamondbacks loss, or the reverse, moves the same 2.5 games in only one direction.
