Jared Jones has a 0.00 ERA in September. Two starts, thirteen innings, zero earned runs — and his own season-long numbers already said a stretch like this was coming.

Jones's actual ERA sits at 4.10, but Statcast's expected mark has him at 3.43 for the year — a gap that ranked him among the unluckier arms in baseball before September arrived. The two starts back it up: 17 strikeouts against 3 walks over 13 innings, just 4 hits allowed, and a 41.7% whiff rate on his slider. Milwaukee — which clinched the NL Central weeks ago and owns the best record in the sport at 94-57 — is the loudest lineup he's faced all month.

The Brewers have nothing left to play for in the standings. Jones has spent five months pitching better than his record showed — tonight's the kind of test that decides whether September was real or just a soft schedule.

Elly De La Cruz is hitting .431 with six home runs and a 1.364 OPS since September 1 — the second-most home runs in baseball this month, on a Cincinnati team that's 24 games out of a playoff spot and has nothing left to play for.

The contact quality backs it up: a 16.0% barrel rate and a 53.6% hard-hit rate, both well above his own season norms. He runs into a pitcher having the opposite kind of September. Blake Snell has allowed a hard-hit ball on just 14.0% of contact against him all season, with a barrel rate (1.2%) that's barely a rounding error, and his 1.91 ERA is actually a touch better than his own 2.10 expected mark — command, not luck. The Dodgers locked up a playoff spot weeks ago; Snell's stuff is the only thing standing between De La Cruz and the hottest month of his season.

Toronto's Bullpen Has Nothing Left. The Market Bet on the Blue Jays Anyway.

Everything about tonight's bullpen math points to Detroit: Toronto's relievers have thrown 18.6 innings over the last three days, the most of any team on the board, with three arms already unlikely to be available and two more running on fumes. Detroit arrives red-hot, winners of six straight. The market looked at both facts and moved the other way.

DraftKings opened this game with Detroit favored (-1.5, -120 on the moneyline). It closed with Toronto favored instead — a full flip of the runline, Blue Jays now -1.5 at -126 on the moneyline. Max Scherzer's actual ERA is an unsightly 6.38, but his expected mark sits nearly two runs lower at 4.43, which may be part of why the book trusts the roster in front of a tired bullpen more than the six-game streak behind it. Toronto sits 2.0 games back of the American League's final wild card spot; Detroit is 4.5 back of the same one.

A bullpen that's gassed can still win if the rotation gives it nothing to do — that's the exact bet the closing line is making.

Texas's hold on the AL West is down to a single game over Houston, and the team standing in the way tonight has one of the best gloves in baseball roaming center field.

Ceddanne Rafaela has saved 15 outs above average this season, tied for third in all of baseball behind only Pete Crow-Armstrong and a pair of middle infielders, with a 92% success rate on balls hit into his zone and 14 runs prevented alongside it. Boston isn't playing out the string either — the Red Sox hold the AL's second wild card spot by 5.5 games — and they arrive with Jake Bennett working through a rough September (7.15 ERA in two starts, more than double his 3.69 season mark). Texas countered with a total that's already moved, from 7.5 runs at open to 8.0 now.

A one-game division lead doesn't get a night off, and neither does a center fielder playing this well — Texas needs its offense to show up against a defense that's already taken plenty away from good teams this year.
