Atlanta opened as a 1.5-point favorite at home over Carolina. By kickoff week it's a 2.5-point underdog — a four-point swing that also flipped the projected winner, one of the sharper reversals on the board all season.
The move traces straight to the injury report. Michael Penix Jr. is out for the year with a torn ACL, the injury that ended Atlanta's Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh early. The bridge quarterback the Falcons brought in over the offseason, Tua Tagovailoa, is now doubtful himself with an oblique injury — the run of quarterback bad luck at this position isn't a one-week story anymore.
Carolina isn't walking in healthy either — it's 0-1 after a 59-37 track meet loss to Chicago that did nothing for its own defense's reputation — but the total hasn't moved with the spread (43.5, unchanged). The market thinks this is a game Carolina wins, not necessarily one it blows open.
Patrick Mahomes' first game back from a long layoff went about as well as Kansas City could have asked — 15-of-27 for 184 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-10 win over Denver that answered the only question anyone had about him.
Indianapolis arrives having answered a different, worse one. The Colts' defense gave up 41 points in its own opener, a loss to Baltimore that Jonathan Taylor (98 yards, 2 touchdowns on 19 carries) nearly had to outscore by himself. Tonight it faces a Chiefs offense that looked entirely normal in its return.
The total has come in a touch since open — 47.5 to 46.5 — with Kansas City the heavier favorite at home (-265). Chris Jones (questionable, calf) is the name to watch on the injury report for a Chiefs defense that will decide whether tonight actually stays close.
Sam Darnold is out with a lower-body injury, Seattle hasn't played a snap in 11 days, and the Seahawks are still favored on the road tonight — down to 3.5 points from an opening line of 10, but favored all the same.
The rest gap is real and it cuts one way: Arizona already has a game under it this week, a 26-14 win over the Chargers, while Seattle's only outing was the season-opening Kickoff Game on September 9th — a 13-10 win over New England that already feels like a while ago.
The 6.5-point swing traces to Darnold's absence, and the total came down with it, 44.5 to 40.5 — the market pricing a lower-scoring game without settling on the other team as the favorite. Arizona's own injury report is lighter, five questionables and nothing worse; the healthier roster still isn't the favored one.
