179 Days on the Injured List. Tonight Jackson Jobe Faces Big-League Hitters Again.
Jackson Jobe hasn't thrown a competitive big-league pitch since 2025. Detroit placed him on the 60-day injured list on February 10 — recovering from Tommy John surgery — before spring training had even wrapped, then walked him back through four levels of a rehab assignment: Lakeland, the Florida Complex League, Double-A Erie, High-A West Michigan. He was activated Friday. Tonight, 179 days after the injured-list placement, he starts for the Tigers in San Francisco.
The last look the league got at him was a rookie season, not a finished product: 10 starts, a 4.22 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, 39 strikeouts and 27 walks across 49 innings — the profile of a former top-10 prospect still figuring out who he is on a mound. Nobody, including Detroit, knows for certain which pitcher shows up tonight after ten-plus months away from live competition.
If there's a gentle place to find out, this is it. Oracle Park carries the lowest run factor (0.92) and the lowest home-run factor (0.88) of any park in use tonight — fly balls that clear a fence anywhere else tend to die in the marine layer here. The wind was blowing close to 15 mph off the bay at the last check, adding to the drag, with temperatures in the mid-60s — the coldest first pitch on the board.
The pitcher on the other side has his own case for regression, just pointed the other way. Landen Roupp is 7-10 with a 4.34 ERA that neither FanGraphs' FIP (3.47) nor Statcast's xERA (3.58) believes — an underperformance gap partly explained by a 66.5% strand rate, well shy of the roughly 72% league norm. The underlying shape is legitimately tough to square up: a 4.3% barrel rate and a 29.7% hard-hit rate, both stingier than most arms on tonight's board.
