Ryan Feltner's Day Starts Have Been a Disaster. Arizona Just Handed Him a Matinee.
Ryan Feltner has allowed a 10.43 ERA in day games this season, more than double his 4.68 mark at night — 14.2 rough innings against 67.1 much better ones, a big enough sample to matter. Today's game at Chase Field starts at 12:40 in the afternoon, local time. There's no ambiguity about which version of him the Diamondbacks are getting.
The season-long picture doesn't offer much shelter either. Feltner's 5.71 ERA sits almost exactly where his FIP (5.74) and Statcast's contact model (5.46 xERA) put him — this isn't bad luck masking good stuff, it's a pitcher getting hit about as hard as the results suggest. He's allowed an 11.3% barrel rate and a 40.0% hard-hit rate built on an extreme 83.9% ground-ball rate, the profile of someone who needs weak contact to survive and hasn't been finding enough of it. His last five starts have been worse than the season line: a 9.39 ERA over that stretch.
Arizona's own starter isn't fully clean either. Merrill Kelly carries a 4.88 ERA that undersells the trouble underneath it — his FIP sits at 5.57 and Statcast's xERA all the way up at 6.97, a 2.09-run gap that's the widest of any starter on tonight's board. Chase Field's roof typically stays closed against August heat, neutralizing most of the outdoor variables. What's left is two starters whose underlying numbers both argue for more damage than either has allowed so far.
