Gabriel Hughes' ERA Says Disaster. His FIP Says Something Much Calmer.
On the scoreboard, Gabriel Hughes has been one of the worst starters in baseball this year — a 6.69 ERA that sits near the bottom of any qualified arm in the league, tonight taking the ball at the one park where that number could plausibly get worse. Somewhere underneath the ERA, though, is a considerably better pitcher than the ledger admits.
Hughes' FIP sits at 3.56 — a number built only from what he actually controls, strikeouts, walks, and homers allowed — a 3.13-run gap between the two that's among the widest in the sport this season. His strand rate is an abnormally low 52.2% even for a rough year, and a .319 BABIP suggests some batted-ball luck and defense that haven't been doing him favors. The stuff and the results are telling two very different stories.
There's a second layer specific to tonight: Hughes has been a different pitcher at Coors than away from it, a 3.86 ERA at home against a 9.47 mark on the road, and tonight he's finally starting in the building where the numbers actually favor him — which he'll need, with the board's highest total of the night sitting at 11.0. Cleveland counters with Tanner Bibee, an odd case of his own — a 4-13 record that undersells a tidy 4.01 ERA — and will be doing it without Rhys Hoskins, placed on the injured list Wednesday with lower back inflammation. A stat line this bad rarely comes with this much reason to expect better. Whether one home start at altitude is really where that shows up is the actual question.
