Philadelphia's Nine-Game Winning Streak Is Carrying an Ace Having His Worst Stretch of the Year.

9:40 PM ET · T-Mobile Park, Seattle, WA
Philadelphia Phillies (73-58) at Seattle Mariners (62-69)
RHP Zack Wheeler (PHI) vs. RHP Logan Gilbert (SEA)
MoneylinePHI −115SEA range −105 to +101 (9 books)⚡ Sharp Signal
Total6.5unchanged
RunlinePHI −1.5SEA +1.5

Philadelphia has won nine games in a row, and for most of that stretch its ace has been the problem, not the reason.

Zack Wheeler has been rocked for a 6.64 ERA over his last five starts — 15 earned runs in 20.3 innings — the kind of number that reads like a pitcher losing his grip on a season. His full-season Statcast profile says otherwise: a 5.8% barrel rate that's among the stingiest marks in the sport, an 83.6% ground-ball rate, and a 2.78 xERA that's actually a shade better than his sparkling 2.92 ERA. The stuff hasn't gone anywhere. The results, for two weeks, just haven't matched it.

Seattle gets the benefit of the softest version of Wheeler in months, and the board still can't fully agree on who's favored — Seattle's moneyline ranges from −105 to +101 across nine books, favorite-direction daylight in a game DraftKings has essentially even. Logan Gilbert takes the mound for the Mariners carrying a mirror-image problem of his own: a 3.35 ERA that's actually 0.35 runs better than his 3.70 xERA, with hitters running a 41.8% hard-hit rate and a 10.1% barrel rate against him. Neither Wheeler's rough patch nor Gilbert's overperformance looks built to last — Philadelphia's win streak has just bought its ace time to sort out which one turns first.

Detroit Is Losing Five Straight. Riley Greene's Barrel Rate Doesn't Know That.

6:40 PM ET · Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Tampa Bay Rays (77-53) at Detroit Tigers (61-69)
RHP Drew Rasmussen (TB) vs. LHP Framber Valdez (DET)
MoneylineTB −130DET +121
Total7.5unchanged
RunlineTB −1.5DET +1.5

Detroit has had a miserable week — five losses in a row, the kind of stretch that buries individual performances under the team record. Riley Greene's numbers this season don't read like a guy playing for a sinking ship.

Greene is barreling the ball at a 14.6% clip and hitting it hard 48.3% of the time, both top-of-the-scale marks, and his expected slugging (.478) actually runs 28 points ahead of his real .450 SLG — contact quality that hasn't fully cashed in yet. A .258 xBA against an actual .273 average says the swings have been even better than his solid batting line already suggests.

Tampa Bay arrives holding one of the best records in the American League at 77-53, and reliever Griffin Jax is working back from a rehab assignment — a sign the Rays' bullpen depth chart is about to get healthier at the right time of year. Framber Valdez takes the ball for a Tigers club trying to avoid a sixth straight loss with a season-long ERA (4.35) that lines up almost exactly with his 4.44 xERA — no hidden luck gap in either direction, just a matchup where Detroit's real problem might be less about pitching and more about a lineup nobody's noticed is still hitting. Five losses in a row is a real streak. Riley Greene quietly mashing through it is a real number too — they're just not telling the same story.

Dansby Swanson · Cubs shortstop · defensive runs above average (Def)
+16.3. The Defensive Runs Swanson Is Quietly Adding While Kevin Gausman's ERA Tells the Wrong Story.

Sixteen and a third. That's how many defensive runs above average Dansby Swanson has been worth at shortstop for the Cubs this season — the best mark on a roster that already ranked among the sport's best defensive infields a week ago.

Swanson's +16.3 Def leads all Cubs defenders and ranks among the best at any position in the sport — 1,023 innings at shortstop with just six errors, a glove that's quietly been erasing the extra baserunners an average pitching staff tends to allow. It's the kind of defense sitting behind a Kevin Gausman start that actually reads better underneath than his 4.58 ERA suggests: a 4.03 xERA, a 0.55-run gap in his favor that says the results have been a touch unlucky, not the process.

Merrill Kelly takes the ball for Arizona off his roughest stretch of the year — an 8.24 ERA over four August starts, more than three runs worse than his season mark. Corbin Carroll's own glove in right field (+10 Outs Above Average) gives the Diamondbacks their own version of Chicago's defensive floor, even on a night the rotation isn't doing the heavy lifting. Two contending infields playing spotless defense behind two very different pitching stories.

Highest Total on the Board. Worst Defense in Baseball. A Starter Who Can't Find It on the Road.

RHP Zebby Matthews (MIN) vs. LHP Jeffrey Springs (ATH)

Total10.59 books, no daylight
RunlineMIN −1.5ATH +1.5

Sacramento doesn't get many marquee matchups, but tonight it quietly owns the slate's shakiest combination: the board's highest total, its worst defensive team, and a starting pitcher who can't find home cooking on the road.

The total sits at 10.5, a run and a half above the next-highest number on the board (9.0, Cubs-Diamondbacks) — and nine different sportsbooks all have it at exactly 10.5, zero disagreement on either side. The Athletics rank dead last in baseball in Outs Above Average (-38) and second-worst in Defensive Runs Saved (-26), a defense that's turned routine contact into extra bases most of the season. Minnesota's Zebby Matthews doesn't get to lean on a strong defense behind him either: he's a 3.14 ERA pitcher at home and a 7.13 ERA pitcher on the road, and tonight's game is in Sacramento.

Jeffrey Springs takes the ball for Oakland carrying a full season's workload on a rebuilding roster, and the pen behind him has logged heavy innings the last three days. When the highest number on the board has this little disagreement attached to it, sometimes the math is just doing its job.
