Cleveland also gets a version of Jackson Jobe that has broken its way before — Detroit's rookie right-hander carries a 0.87 ERA in day games this season against 7.62 at night, and today's 1:40 PM ET first pitch is a day game.

The standings say three teams are separated by two games. Tonight's schedule says only one of them actually has to earn it.

Both teams are in action this afternoon: Arizona at Houston, San Diego hosting Gerrit Cole and a Yankees team six games clear of its own AL wild card cutline.

A half-game gap with three weeks left doesn't leave much room for a bad hop — which is exactly the kind of margin a good defense is built to protect.

Pittsburgh's own Paul Skenes takes the mound in the same game — his 3.97 ERA is actually a half-run worse than his 3.23 expected mark, the rare case of an emerging ace who's been unlucky, not lucky.
