Dublin gets the honor of opening the college football season this year. TCU and North Carolina kick off at Aviva Stadium at noon Eastern — the fifth straight year the Aer Lingus College Football Classic has claimed Week Zero, and the 11th college football game the city has hosted since Notre Dame and Navy first brought the sport there in 2012.

Neither roster has taken a snap on Irish soil before, and neither team returns much of what made it good last year — TCU brings back just 22.4% of its offensive production, and North Carolina isn't far ahead at 27.8%. TCU is still the two-score favorite, priced at a −8.2 consensus across nine books (DraftKings has it at −8.5), with a moneyline that's held in a tight −360-to−310 band all week. The gap is projection, not returning experience: TCU's preseason SP+ rating of 9.4 sits nearly six points clear of North Carolina's 3.5, with both offenses effectively starting from scratch at the skill positions.

It's a cool, overcast afternoon for a season opener by American standards — low 60s and calm wind at kickoff, a long way from the September humidity either program is used to at home. The total sits at 45.9, tight enough across books (45.5 to 46.5) that nobody's arguing hard about pace. Whatever either team's identity turns out to be this fall, it debuts three time zones from campus.

59.9%. That's the share of last year's offensive production NC State returns tonight — the highest mark in the ACC, headlined by 93.1% of its passing production coming back intact. Virginia is the conference's mirror image: 9.5% returning, the lowest in the ACC, with almost none of its passing game — 1.1% — back from a year ago.

The market doesn't care. Virginia opens as a 4-point favorite at home, with a moneyline near −181 across nine books and a total of 51.2. Whatever the Cavaliers are replacing, their preseason SP+ rating of 8.1 still edges NC State's 5.7 — built more on the defensive side, where Virginia's 18.9 defensive SP+ rates ahead of NC State's 24.9 (lower is stingier). NC State actually projects as the better offense on paper, 31.0 to 26.9, but that's a roster running behind a defense that graded out worse last year.

Both programs are building their openers around uncertainty by definition — there's no in-season data yet, just last year's tape and whatever a coaching staff installed over the offseason. A team that kept almost everyone is a betting underdog tonight, on the road, against a team that kept almost no one.

Nothing on Today's College Football Slate Is Lonelier Than USC's Season Opener.

USC is going to be favored by more than five touchdowns tonight, and nothing about the numbers argues against it.

The Trojans' −38.5 spread is the widest of any game on today's 8-game board — more than seven points clear of the next-largest line, Florida State's −31.5 over New Mexico State. USC's preseason SP+ rating of 17.7 is the best of any team in today's slate; San José State's −15.7 is the worst. USC also returns 59.2% of last year's offensive production, including 90.9% of its passing output — a veteran group by season-opener standards — against a Spartans roster that brings back just 3.8%, the lowest returning mark in the Mountain West.

Kickoff at the Coliseum is a noon local start with temperatures pushing toward 96°F, the warmest venue on today's board. A mismatch on paper, in a building that's about to become one of the hottest openers in the country.

Carlos Rodón and Jake Bennett split a doubleheader today, the makeup of a game rained out back on June 6, and nine sportsbooks still haven't fully agreed on how to price game one.

New York is a consensus −119 moneyline favorite, but Boston's price ranges from −102 to +110 depending on the book — a plus-money underdog somewhere, a near-even favorite somewhere else. The run line tells the same story from a different angle: some books have New York −1.5, needing to win by two, others still favor the Yankees while conceding a run. Rodón's own numbers explain some of the hesitation — a 3.15 ERA that's outperforming his 4.00 xERA by 0.85 runs, the kind of gap that invites regression. Bennett's ERA and FIP are barely a tenth of a run apart, 3.49 to 3.31, which means his season line is mostly telling the truth — though his last four August starts have been rockier, a 5.73 ERA in the month.

Boston's bullpen is already thin entering a day that will need a lot of it — Wyatt Olds has pitched in back-to-back outings the last three days and profiles as unavailable for length tonight. New York enters four games clear of Boston in the loss column. Two games, two different lines, and neither market fully settled before first pitch.
