Chris Sale's overperformance held up — 3 earned runs in 7 innings on just 3 hits, still outpitching his 3.06 xERA. Aaron Nola's process finally caught up: 2 earned over 6.1 innings, the quality start his 3.95 xERA had been arguing for since the gap opened. Atlanta won the game and the season series, 6-5.

Texas Returns More Rushing Production Than It Lost. Ohio State's Defense Doesn't Care.

Texas returns 126.4% of last year's rushing production — not a typo, a portal class that added more ground than the group it replaced. Arch Manning, a full year into the job now, just posted 305 yards and four touchdowns in his season debut. On paper, the Longhorns look like the healthier roster walking into tonight's game.

Ohio State's defense doesn't read the roster sheet. The Buckeyes grade out at -0.22 expected points allowed per play, the best mark of either team in this game by a wide margin — Texas's own defense sits at +0.14, giving up more than it should per snap. Ohio State's Julian Sayin threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns in his own opener, and Jeremiah Smith caught eight of them for 151 yards. Both rosters can score. Only one defense has shown it can stop anyone yet.

Portal reloads win rosters on paper. Whether that roster wins a game against a defense playing this well is the actual question kickoff answers.

Ohio State's Defense Doesn't Let Anyone Get Ahead of the Down. Arch Manning Hasn't Faced a Front This Disruptive Yet.

Ohio State's defense doesn't have a marquee returning name headlining it this year — Riley Pettijohn led the season opener with six tackles, Epi Sitanilei got the unit's only sack — and the numbers say that doesn't matter yet.

The Buckeyes posted a 22.6% havoc rate in that opener — a tackle for loss, a takeaway, or a pass breakup on better than one of every five snaps — while limiting Ball State to -0.22 expected points added per play, the best defensive mark either team brings into tonight's game. Texas counters with a defense allowing +0.14 EPA a play, a real gap between the two units, and Arch Manning hasn't faced a front this disruptive in his two starts this season.

A defense doesn't need a household name to be the best unit on the field. It just needs the numbers, and tonight Ohio State has them.

San Diego Just Won Its Fifth Straight and Grabbed the NL's Final Wild Card Spot Outright.

San Diego has won five in a row, and for the first time in weeks the Padres don't have to share the National League's final wild card spot with anyone. They sit a half-game clear of Arizona, alone at 79-68.

Michael King (3.00 ERA) starts against César Perdomo at Oracle Park, in a road environment that's about to get loud with wind off the Bay. San Diego is 7-3 over its last 10 — the best stretch of its season at the moment it matters most, with the wild card cutline finally clear behind it instead of tied.

Arizona plays its own game tonight, a rematch with the Texas team it just beat 9-1 — the half-game gap could tighten by tomorrow morning. Tonight, San Diego controls only its own half of the math, and it's winning that half.

Michigan Opened This Game as a Home Favorite Over Oklahoma. The Market Has Since Walked It All the Way Back.

Eight points. That's the total swing on the Oklahoma-Michigan spread since the line opened — Michigan -2.5 at home, now Oklahoma -5.5 on the road, with the moneyline flipping from a -142 home favorite to a +170 home underdog in the same window.

The market didn't nudge here — it reversed direction entirely, and the underlying numbers back the move. Oklahoma's defense grades out at -0.31 expected points allowed per play, elite by any measure, and its overall SP+ rating sits 9.5 points above Michigan's. Both teams enter 1-0, but only one of them has looked like a top-25 team doing it.

Home-field bias built the opening number. A full week of information tore it back down.

Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina are playing the US Open women's final today — a rematch of the 2026 Australian Open final, the last time the two met on a Grand Slam stage. Rybakina won that one, her second major title.

Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 10-7 overall and 2-1 in Grand Slam finals specifically, and enters as the moneyline favorite — but the most recent major final between them belongs to Rybakina, not her.
