Tennessee is a 1.5-point home favorite today, the first time the market has favored the Titans in seventeen games, per nflverse's full closing-line history. The last time a sportsbook took that side of a Titans game, the calendar read January of last year.

Cam Ward is most of the reason. Tennessee's rookie quarterback started all 17 games last season and finished with the rough season line a No. 1 pick usually posts — 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns, seven interceptions — but his last eight starts looked like a different player: 10 touchdowns against a single pick. Only one other rookie in NFL history has finished a season with seven or fewer interceptions on 500-plus attempts. The market is betting the finish, not the season average, is the real version.

New York, for its part, is walking in having moved on from last year's answer at quarterback — Justin Fields is no longer on the roster — and turned to a veteran instead. Neither team arrives especially proven. Only one of them arrives as the favorite.

Atlanta spent the offseason building a safety net under Michael Penix Jr. — a one-year deal for Tua Tagovailoa, signed in March after Miami released him, meant to bridge the gap while Penix recovered from a torn ACL. Penix still isn't back. Now Tagovailoa isn't playing either.

Penix underwent season-ending surgery last November and remains out. Tagovailoa is sidelined today with an oblique injury of his own. That leaves Cooper Rush — himself questionable with a back issue, but still projected for real offensive snaps and presumed atop the depth chart — as Atlanta's answer in Pittsburgh, with rookie Jack Strand as the emergency option if Rush can't finish. Pittsburgh is a 6.5-point favorite at home, and the total sits at 40.5, nearly five points below the league's own average — the market has already priced in what a depth chart like this does to a scoring line.

Three quarterbacks deep and still shorthanded is usually a December story. Atlanta is living it in Week 1.

Freddy Peralta takes the mound for Tampa Bay today with a 1.50 ERA in September — two starts, 12 innings, two earned runs, nine strikeouts against a single walk. His full-season number is 4.82.

The Rays lead the AL East by four games over the Yankees at 89-59, and a starter finding it in the middle of September, in a dome that runs close to neutral (Tropicana Field's run factor sits at 0.96), is exactly the edge a division leader wants heading into October.

Every officiating crew draws a Week 1 assignment, and New Orleans-Detroit landed one of the league's quietest whistles: Alan Eck's crew has called 10.7 penalties a game over 50 games, the lowest rate among the NFL's 17 profiled referees, against a league average of 12.1.

That's 90 penalty yards a game against a league-wide 98 — not an enormous gap, but a real and repeatable one, and it lands on a game already carrying the day's highest total: Detroit -7.0 at home, 49.5 points at a dome that neutralizes the weather entirely, 4.2 points above the league's own average. A crew that lets more plays stand tends to let a track meet stay a track meet.

Ben Shelton reached his first Grand Slam final by beating Frances Tiafoe in an all-American semifinal Friday — the first Black American man to reach the US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Waiting across the net today is the No. 1 seed, Alexander Zverev, who broke through for his own first major at Roland Garros this spring.
